Benefits Support

SAVI is aware that having a disability such as sight loss is not only a physical loss, and emotional trauma, it also causes more of a financial burden. Many thing that people would have done for themselves when they could see, now need assistance from another person or equipment. This could be for day to day needs such as having a cleaner or gardener, someone to help with shopping, repairing  and ironing clothes. Or DIY that you may have tackled yourself.

Because of the additional expense of being disabled, the Government provides financial benefits that  disabled people are entitled to claim.

These benefits are not means tested and are not connected to how much money you already have, but to claim you do need to show that you are now having difficulties with normal day to day living because of your sight loss or other disabilities.

SAVI encourages people to claim for these benefits. For people applying when they are over 65 years, they need to claim for Attendance Allowance, for younger people they need to claim for Disability Living Allowance.

If you wish to find out more about benefits yourself, there are a number of websites that can give you advice. Go to our Benefits links page to find the selection of sites we know of that may be helpful to you.
