Leaving a Legacy
Making a Will
It is important to make a will for a number of reasons
- You are the only person who can decide what should happen to your estate and you will probably want to ensure that first of all your family and friends are looked after. After such commitments have been made, you may also decide that you would like SAVI to benefit, inf you are impressed with the charitable work we do for Surrey's visually impaired adults and children.
- 7 out of 10 people have not made a Will. This means that their money and property does not automatically go to their next of kin. Friends and relatives can then be left to sort out all the legal issues, and if you have no immediate relatives, all the estate will go to the government.
- It is not expensive or complicated to make a Will. If you wish to do so you just need to make an appointment with your solicitor and describe how your wishes are to be met.
- It is important that you make clear the details of beneficiaries of your Will. For example if you wish to leave a legacy to help blind and partially sighted people in Surrey then state that Surrey Association for Visual Impairment (SAVI) should benefit
- There is a tax benefit to leaving a gift or legacy to a registered charity. The gift or legacy does not incur tax and can reduce the overall value of your estate for inheritance tax purposes
People leave legaices to SAVI for many reasons
Maybe they were a client who benefited from SAVI's help and support.
Perhaps they were a volunteer or supporter who wished for SAVI's work to continue long after their own involvement was over.
It could be that a relative or friend benefited from SAVI's services and this is a way of saying thank you.
Legacy gifts contribute to our general funds which means that unless you state otherwise, the money can be used as SAVI thinks best. If you want to visit SAVI please call us and we will make the necessary arrangements.
